Leaked Xbox One Controller Designed To Increase Accessibility

It looks like Microsoft could be taking a big step in the right direction for inclusive gaming, with a recently leaked image of a new controller supposedly designed for greater accessibility.

The above tweet comes from Twitter user @h0x0d, who offered an image of the new controller without anything resembling an explanation. Not too far into the discussion, though, Windows Central chimed in to explain that the image is likely a new controller the company has been working on to offer greater gaming opportunities to those who require additional accessibility options.

The post offers quite a bit of insight into the controller, including a prediction that the official reveal will happen sometime between now and E3 2018 in early June. As for functionality, they’ve done a solid job of breaking the image down.

If you’ll look up at the top of the controller, you’ll noticed grooved areas that are labeled with all of the various functionality of the Xbox One controller. This could be used for control, as well as programming the various other inputs on the controller. There’s also a D-Pad available, as well as large buttons for “A” and “B”. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that those buttons are also touch enabled, functioning similar to the pads on the Steam controller. But that’s just speculation, of course.

Since there is a three-light LED similar to the one seen on the Elite V2 controller, the source suspects that this means the controller will also have the ability to program three layouts for quick use. Also visible on the small controller are what appear to be a headphone jack and a USB port.

What’s interesting about this controller is how, at a glance, it appears to be quite simple. And we imagine it functions that way, too, only with the ability to create some rather sophisticated custom uses for the various inputs.

We’re big fans of the idea of anyone who wants to play a video game being able to do so, which makes this an impressive offering from the folks at Microsoft. Assuming this controller is what it appears to be, that means more people than ever before will be able to more comfortably enjoy games like Sea of Thieves, Forza and Halo.

This is the kind of thing we would love to see from every hardware manufacturer, so, hopefully, this new Xbox controller will spur both Sony and Nintendo on to create something similar for their respective consoles.

Here’s hoping the proper reveal comes sooner rather than later, and that this new, accessibility-focused controller gets on store shelves with a quickness.
